I've noticed on the non-hybrids that the quantity changed from 5 quarts in 2010 to 5.3 quarts in 2011. Was this done by changing the oil pan or by changing the FULL mark on the dipstick?? TIA

Hi hybrid. :wavey: There has been no change. Can you provide a link to where you read that information?

The available PDF versions of the 2010 and 2011 Fusion Owner Manuals both list the fill capacity for the I-4 as "5.3 quarts (5.0 L)" (copied and pasted). And the PDF versions are exactly the same as the printed hard copies.

From the 2010 Owners Manual: "Engine oil (2.5L engine) 5.3 quarts (5.0 L)"
From the 2011 Owners Manual: "Engine oil (2.5L engine) 5.3 quarts (5.0 L)" Again, both copied and pasted to avoid any errors.

You can verify this information here: www.fleet.ford.com/maintenance/owners_manuals/default.asp

Good luck.

On page 321 , ist printing, of 10fsnog1e,( my computer's document name) my document shows 5.0 quarts. On page 329, Ist printing, of 11fsnog1e, my document says 5.3 quarts. On page 335, 2011, 3rd printing, it shows 5.3 quarts. I got these from the site you mention. The HYBRID manuals do show no change in capacity. Am I reading these wrong?

Hi hybrid. :wavey: I am not sure where you are seeing the "1st Printing" being offered. When accessing the Ford Fleet website I linked to earlier, the 1st Printing is not available. The only 2010 Ford Fusion Owners Manual offered is the "4th Printing" ("2010 Fusion Owner Guide 4th Printing (English)") with a file name of "10fsnog4e.pdf".

Anyway, whatever the root cause of the capacity "mystery", be it a misprint in the "1st Printing" version etc., there were no pan, dipstick, capacity or other changes. The correct fill specification for all non-hybrid 2010 and 2011 2.5L I-4's is "5.3 quarts (5.0 L)".

Edit - I found a copy of the 1st Printing you are describing. The 2010 Fusion Owners Manual 1st through 4th Printings are available on the Ford/Lincoln-Mercury website located here: www.flmowner.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=Owner/Page/IdentifyVehiclePage&BackToLogin=Owner/Page/OwnerGuidePage&ord=91325628

You are correct that the 2010 1st Printing states 5.0 quarts. However, beginning with the 2nd printing and all subsequent printings, that capacity/specification was updated to 5.3 quarts. The 1st Printing oil capacity was simply a misprint. It is likely that is just one of the reasons for the subsequent revisions (2nd, 3rd and 4th Printings)

Also, just as a general FYI for all of us: The correct way to refill after an oil change is to carefully add the oil. In other words, just don't dump in 5.3 quarts (or whatever a specific engine oil capacity may be) and call it a day. That is a dry fill capacity, and simply dumping in a preset amount may wind up giving an overfill situation. When approaching the specified fill capacity, slow down and check the dipstick for the proper fill level several times until the correct fill reading is reached. Again, this is to avoid an overfill condition.

Hope this helps.

Good luck.

The 1st printing is one I got from the same website last year and kept in my document file on the computer along with the 1st printing for my Hybrid. On the website, the Hybrid manuals still show 5.0 quarts for both years. Missprint too? Thanks for explaining the reason for the difference.

Hi hybrid. :wavey: I only researched the specific models we were discussing; non-hybrid 2010-2011 2.5 specs. So the information in my previous replies does not pertain to hybrid models.

Since you state that all printings of the Owners Manual specs for the 2010 and 2011 hybrids list 5.0 quart capacities (I am taking your word for it), then that would not be a misprint.

But in the end (again, just as an FYI for all of us), those Owners Manual specs are dry fill capacities, and simply dumping in a preset amount may wind up giving an overfill situation. The correct way to refill after an oil change is to carefully add the oil and check the fill level as you get closer to the specified fill capacity. In other words, just don't dump in 5.3 quarts, 5.0 quarts, 6.0 quarts etc. (or whatever is listed as the specific dry engine oil capacity) and call it a day. When approaching the specified fill capacity, slow down and check the dipstick for the proper fill level several times until the correct fill reading is reached on the dipstick. Then after running the vehicle a minute or so, let it sit for a few minutes, then check the oil level one more time. Again, this is to avoid an overfill (or underfill) condition.

Hopefully, this will help avoid confusion for other FFC members with similar questions.

Good luck.

Thank you. As usual your comments are very welcome and you're right on checking the level instead of just dumping in the oil. I've often wondered what the safe differential of over fill is. Is it one quart or one pint before we whip the oil into foam. I bet there is a design factor for all the clueless DYI owners.
