I was looking at Ebay and there are lot's of 17x8 mustang rims with tires using the 5 lug 4 1/2 with 40mm offset using 235/50 R 17. I know SEL for fusion are 225/50 R 17.

Any thoughts would be great.

I am not sure about the offset but I have 18x7.5 with 245/40/18 on mine with no problems.

You need to check the hub diameter of the Mustang wheels to see if it is larger enough to fit onto the Fusion. Rear wheel drive cars tend to have a smaller hub diameter than front wheel drive cars.
