Anyone else notice a ticking from the left side of the engine? I have noticed this on my 3.0 ltr and after doing some research came up with this TSB issued by Ford Engineering.

TSB
06-8-11 CAMSHAFT TICK NOISE - 3.0L 4V ENGINE ONLY WITH EXHAUST CAMSHAFT DRIVEN WATER PUMPS

Publication Date: April 14, 2006

FORD: 2005-2006 Five Hundred, Freestyle, Montego
2006 Fusion, Milan, Escape, Mariner
LINCOLN: 2006 Zephyr

ISSUE:
Some 2005-2006 Five Hundred, Freestyle, Montego and 2006 Fusion, Milan, Zephyr, and 2006 Escape and Mariner vehicles built 1/17/2006 and later equipped with the 3.0L 4V Duratec engine with exhaust camshaft driven water pumps may exhibit a ticking noise from the left bank cylinder head with the engine at normal operating temperature.

ACTION:

SERVICE PROCEDURE

To diagnose, with the engine running and warm (normal operation temperature), using a mechanic's stethoscope determine if ticking noise is coming from the left hand exhaust camshaft at cylinder number 6 (Figure 1). If ticking noise can be verified, refer to the following Service Procedure.

Figure 1 - Article 06-8-11

Remove the left hand camshaft cover. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-01 of the appropriate manual.
Rotate the engine clock wise until the cylinder number 6 exhaust cam lobes are pointing up and the valves are fully closed.
Remove all left hand exhaust cam caps individually and reinstall them finger tight.
Torque bolts in sequence shown in Figure 2, to 72 lb-in (8 N-m) excluding cam cap number 4L camshaft cap.

Figure 2 - Article 06-8-11

Using a screw driver positioned on each side of the top of cam cap number 4L (Figure 3) apply hand pressure and shift cam cap number 4L toward the exhaust side of the cylinder head.

Figure 3 - Article 06-8-11

While holding cam cap number 4L in the shifted position, torque the fasteners number 9 (inboard) first, to 72 lb-in (8 N-m) then torque fastener number 10 (Figure 3).
Install the left hand camshaft cover. Refer to appropriate WSM, Section 303-01.
Fully warm the engine to verify the repair.

WARRANTY STATUS:
Eligible Under Provisions Of New Vehicle Limited Warranty Coverage

I know that my car is a Christmas-time car, and it was built BEFORE the specified date -- yet I have the tick at times. It may be the injector "tick" that was previously covered in another post.

Might be worth checking out, anyway.

Awesome info, should be a sticky.

Mine ticks too.
Someone told me it was because of the plastic manifold.

Does not explain why some do it and others do not. A lot of dealers do not want to get involved with doing invasive work. The "tick" could be normal, could be timing chain tensioners, could be a bad lifter or other valve train issues, could be an oil pump issue, or even fuel injectors. The fact that a good number of people have a "tick" with the 3.0L suggests that something ain't quite right. Granted, the tick does not sound like destructive metal-to-metal contact, so that's good news. The other good news is that the tick does not go away when the engine warms up; if it did, then we would most likely have piston slap...very bad. If anyone out there gets their tick to go away, please inform the rest of us as the TSB fix was evidently not what was causing my ticking.
