So back in February when I wasn't working, Jodo McFatty (local M3F member to me) asks me if I was able for a couple months, 'cause he heard they were looking for someone right away at work. All I knew was it was a "help desk" position. So I call up the supervisor, this is at the University of Victoria, and arrange an interview that day on a Thursday afternoon. Now me being business trained, I thought this was a serious long shot. So I go to the interview, get grilled with a million techie questions, and some how I came up with the correct answers! So I started on Monday. I was covering for someone who was on maturnity leave returning on April 7th. There was another guy who was there before me who got a permanent position somewhere else on campus. So I was like, sweet, I get a job for a couple months. So I get to work, and I find out I'm making a huge whack of cash, so I was like sweet, tons of cash for 2 months! April 7th rolls around, and I still have a job. I hear the lady on mat. leave is now coming back on April 18, and I'd work until the 21st ~ sweet a couple weeks extra. Then about a week later, the lady resigns!!! Because it's union, my position had to be posted, it couldn't just be handed over to me. Which sucks because the guy I took over from, didn't like the supervisor at his new position (he let's people walk all over him) so he wanted to come back to this department. I was like....fuck, now I'm out a job, because this guy had been here longer.

Then I find out there's some other positions on campus doing the same thing that's gonna get posted at the same time as my job. But then I hear through the grape vine that they already had other internal people in mind for those positions. So now I thought I was definitely screwed. To top it off, talkinga bout bad timing, I'm going on vacation on May 12th for 16 days, and I can't cancel it (going to Botswana). So now I thought I was definitely screwed.

So my supervisor tells me that 26 people applied for the position. He doesn't need to interview me ~ cool. He said that the other guy would get the position if he wanted it because he had been there longer. So now I'm like...great, that little a-hole is going to take my job when he already has one. Then some how my supervisor convinced the other guy to take the other position.

So the day before I leave for vacation for 16 days, I get told that unless Dave magically doesn't get hired for the other position (95% chance he's getting it), then I get the job! :bananadance: . I couldn't believe what I just heard!

I can't believe I'm moving forward so fast with my life, I just turned 20 a couple months ago and I'm set out to earn $50k a year  . I guess I'll finally be moving out of the house! :klavergreg:

Hey congrats! I think it's that time of year for new opportunities... my work has been very ...uhm... interesting lately with political bull shit and upper management jockeying for position in an already failing mult-billion dollar project. There's also cost-cutting going around and they're screwing over employees any way possible to save a buck or two. I came to the big bank partly because of the money and great benefits, ability to work at home, excellent location in midtown Manhattan. Now they're moving us to this junky old building downtown which will add an hour a day for the commute and $80 / month. I'm up for promotion coming up (since ya know I've been doing the work of a level higher for the past year but HR said I had to be here 2 years to get the title). But I learned that it means promotion in title only - I'll just get my normal yearly raise!

So just for grins, I'm looking and applying in PA where the cost of living is cheaper, AND it seems I can make more money just by jumping ship! If I play my cards right, I might even be able to buy my own condo rather comfortably.

In short, congrats Jared! Please send some of that luck my way! :D

Yeah...I'm still stunned that all of this even happened.  The funny part is I actually earn more money now than Jodo McFatty who got me the position! :dunno:

Oh, and according to my boss I have to write in my will that if I get eaten by a lion I agree to not accept the position  :hahano: .

Nice! Congrats Jared. When I moved to a technical position, my increase in pay was good enough to allow my wife and I our own house. But I'm still not making as much as you... wait... that's 50K in Canadian money, right?? What's that in US currency?

Is that in real money too? ;-)

And damn Felipe - how the hell did you afford a house? I guess two incomes helps a bit, but I'm making a bit more than that and struggling to even dream about buying a place. Seriously - I'm lookin in PA to buy a friggin condo or something and commute two hours each way if I don't get a good job in PA!

What's really amazing is that unlike most people that buy a house nowadays... we actually CAN afford our house. ...but we had to buy one that was over a hundred years old and out in west bumblefuck. We're slowly getting it together, and then we'll sell it at a profit and have money to put down on a house that we actually want!

Greetings from Germany Yo. Only thing keeping me "sane" is getting in a little M3F (at 8 fucking Euros for an hour of internet, and 3 hotties at the table next to me).
