Just picked up the car. I have about 200 miles on the motor, and I'm getting 17.4mpg right now. Does that seem right? I know the motor has to break in, and it goes up every 10 miles or so that I drive. What do you think?

1. Don't worry about the mileage when new (I assume you have a V-6).

2. The Duratec has a history of not "loosening" up until 4000 miles or so. Mine has 10000 miles, and the gas mileage is still improving, getting 24 + in mixed driving (about 60% highway with speeds of 75-80).

3. The readout from the computer is only an approximation. It seems to be more accurate if you do not vary your driving - say on a trip. With occasional start and stop driving, plus some highway, plus some brisk acceleration, I have found it to be off 2 - 3 MPG (both over and under at different times). The most accurate measure is to use the same gas pump at the same station and to stop the pump after the same number of auto shutoffs, then divide Gallons into Miles driven. The Trip1 and Trip2 on the computer appear to be accurate.

4. Enjoy the car and report your mileage after 4000 miles. I think you will be happy.

If you want gas mileage, do the tank test... restart your tripometer when you fill up, drive however long, see how much gas it takes to fill up (and of course, don't go past the automatic shutoff of the gas pump on any fillup). I never trust those computers.

Anyway, assuming you aren't driving it really hard, you should get at least 20 mpg, maybe upwards of 24 or so.

Luckily, when I got my car it was completely filled. I think they might have pumped it a little past the stopper, so I am going to underestimate a little on purpose.

I have about 230 miles on the car. I'm going to say there was 16 gallons in the tank rather than 15.8?

I have a quarter tank left.

1/4 of 16 = 4

So 12 gallons is what I've used (roughly) and I've gone 230 some odd miles. That means I'm getting 19mpg right now on a brand new car.

That's not too shabby. So at around 1000 I will do this test again.

THANKS for all of the help!

If your guage says 1/4 of a tank, you probably have more than that. When my guage reads empty (and my message center says "0 miles to empty", I still have amost 2 gallons left in the tank!

When I got my car the mpg started out aroung 18 mpg. I have had the car 4 months and I am getting around 29 mpg. So give it time to loosen up and enjoy the new car. I love mine.

Yea I just realized everyone is right. The computer is so far off. I'm at 280 miles now, and I still have a 1/4 tank. Computer says 80 miles untill empty. Thanks everyone.

This car drives like a dream. I'm used to the STi which rode like a golf cart... at best.

whatup,

I too average about 28 MPG and just today filled up and...............drumroll please, got 30.05! I didin't think I'd hit that mark untill the engine was fully broke in (I have 3K miles) especially considering that there was an unusual amount of stop and go traffic on the interstate during the last two days. What can I say, this car is great!  8)
