There may be (will be, at some points... for up to 2 days) some service interruptions this week as we move to a new server.

We're moving to our own, dedicated server. It is a P4 3.06 HT dedicated server located in the Superb datacenter in McLean, VA.

MZ6, you should switch your forum software and convert over to invision power board. Its much better than IPB.

If you have heard of InvisionFree.com, I am the founder of that website. I can help you out with server stuff and related. For the past 5 years I have been working with IPB and server related activities.

You will be able to hold more users online at the same time and the features are a lot more advanced than phpBB. Lots of better features too.

PM if you wanna talk-- Or AIM me, Subwoo4er

I've tried setting up a lot of forums - and there's always one thing that drives me batty about most of the well-developed forums. They have too many freaking features and slip stuff all over the place on the screen.

phpBB has to be the simplest - yet effective things out there. I think invision is great - but whenever I look at it - I just compare it to phpBB and then realize that all those extra features seem unecessary (such as tracking a thread). Although, skinning seems easier in InvisionFree :)

I loathe java-based forums the most though.

And that's exactly why we run phpBB. This forum was originally built in IPB, believe it or not. The interface just annoyed the hell / confused the hell outta me. As a friend of mine from 6club says, forum software is built to be applied to too many types of sites, and has become too bloated because of it.

That being said, I'm not saying I like the fact that we've had to hack together a usable version of phpBB... just that it has served us well to this point. It is somewhat inefficient, however.

track a thread? phpbb has that option-- watch for replies. and that is a very useful feature, allows you to keep track of a thread for replies and such. really good for busy forums

yeah ipb does have a lot of features, and i find a lot of them very useful. i dunno, just my preferability i guess.

1) I dunno I prefer IPB's interface over phpBB, which ive never liked

2) companies make forum software to provide people (like you and me) a forum. they do have the simplest basic forums out there which im sure you can find on a site like hotscript.com (or something like taht). then they make forums like ipb, vb, phpbb, etc which offer you a lot of useful features. they dont get in the way of anything and usually you can disable them.

i guess i just don't like phpbb, but ill live with it :)

Not that I'm going to use it though ;)

In IPB, its not even displayed there. There is a button next to new topic called options that brings down a list of things you can do to the topic.

we've talked about different forums softwares before. but i've done so many hacks to this one that i'd hate to lose all my hard work. ;)

although, i'm thinking about coming up with a new hacked version of the forum with more and better features, so we'll see. we'll have to look into what the most cost and time effective solution would be.
