I've noticed many of the members ages are nearly half of mine, nothing wrong with that I wish I was there again especially with todays technology available. So I need you all to help out an old gray hair with choosing a performance muffler that will sound nice for the 2.3 Fusion. V-8's are easy but the 4's are difficult to figure out and not make it sound like a fart in a 50 gallon drum, there lies the issue. What mufflers are available that produce a little power and torque, provide a low civilized sound and have a dual tip outlet. A tall order no doubt but any suggestions are appreciated. A complete cat back system would be nice but as we all see not too much movement on the parts front is taking place yet. I took a good look at the stock system and it's very well engineered and will not require a full aftermarket system to make it work well. A 2.5 inch primary pipe from the flex coupler and tightens down to a 2.0 inch resinator to a 2.25 inch tail section to the strangest muffler ever installed. All the pipe is stainless mandrel bends so as yo can see a good starting point.
:(
Thanks. Marc

I've had two brands on my vehicles. On my Explorer I had a Borla and on my SHO I had a Bullet, both are straight through designs. The Brorla sounded a bit raspy, and the Bullets made my SHO sound like an Indy car at WOT. My brother has a ProDrive on his WRX which is also straight through. His is a 4 banger, but it sounds totally different than an inline 4, it's very bassey. One of the nicest exhausts I've heard on the 2.3 is the stock Focus ST. It has a tone but it's not loud. I don't think there's any company with an exhaust out for any Fusion yet so I'd wait awhile and let other people buy them and get feedback from them untill spending your money on something you might not like.

Thanks for the information, Borla, Magnaflow,Flowmaster, Dynomax all have their particular sound and probably a little louder than I want. The stock system on the Mazda 6 also has a little rasp to it but that's what I'm looking for. I've wondered what the 2.3 would sound like if the stock resonator was removed, or would it boom inside the cabin ? I listened to some sound files for the AeroTurbine and that's interesting sounding too but damn it's ugly.
I believe all the Focus ST has is the last resonator/muffler thing removed. I really think that's the sound you're looking for. Removing resonator does a lot to the sound. I removed the 3rd cat and the resonator in my SHO and that's whent he sound really got loud. A V8 sounds much better than an I4 so I loved it. I couldn't imagine what doing that to an I4 would sound like.

well, if you are looking for performance gains, I would get a downpipe and full catback (have an intake as well) not just a muffler. If you just throw a muffler on, you are still flowing through the restrictive stock piping to get to that muffer, and then all the sudden you are going from a small pipe into a free flowing muffler...that is the reason (along with the shape and size of the silencer in the muffler) that you get the fart can noise. When you go with a full 3" exhaust from the header back, you will have a constant free flow and a throatier tone.

Actually, from testing conducted by ourselves, as well as other manufactures of exhaust systems for the 2.3L Duratec engine on the Focus and Mazda3... 2.5" piping provided the best horsepower gains, compared to 2.25" piping. We also gained more torque with the 2.5" piping.

Our exhaust kits for the Fusion will be 2.5" in diameter and then split out into two rear tips.

Well as soon as Draxas is ready with the system for the 2.3 please contact me immediately. I'll respond with card number in hand and a smile on my face.

We will have exhausts for both the V6 and the 4-banger...no worries...

Hopefully we can begin testing on our system in early March.

We do need a V6 to stop by our facility in Lancaster to perform an initial inspection and take some pics. THis will let us determine (via the pics) how to design the kit. Anyone want to receive a free exhaust kit? :)

For the people out there who either dont have alot to spend or dont want to spend alot then you might be interested in this. I went to the local midas shop and got two mufflers and tips put on for only $500.00. The mufflers are called vortex. It actualy sounds really nice. Well worth the money.
Can you get a sound clip? For me, $500 for two mufflers and tips IS expensive. A full cat-back from Magnaflow is only $100 more. Call me crazy, but hey -- I am waiting, doing some research and I'm gonna go custom.
