Anyone find their cars almost impossible to put into reverse right away? This is really frustrating me. It's embarassing! Someone new would be riding with me in my new car and there i am trying to get the stupid m-f'er into gear! Sometimes if i'm on a slope, i can just roll it back and it will go right in, but i'm not always on a slope. :x I remember this trait from my '90s Escort GTs, which i believe have the same tranny. You'd think they would have improved on that by now.

YES! Its annoying. Blah, I really hate that. I make the grinding sound from time to time, esp. when its cold out. Not good at all!

Same problem here. It usually takes me 2 tries to engage reverse. It seems worse parked on a decline, when the front of the car is lower than the rear. Then I will sometimes have to really work it to find reverse. Sometimes letting out the clutch a bit will help. If it won't go into reverse I will let out the clutch all the way then try again and usually I can get it.

When you can't get in reverse, shift into a forward gear first and then hit reverse. It will almost always drop right in.

Yeah, sometimes that doesn't work for me either. I wonder if a performance shifter would make a difference?

I know when i had my Mustang GT, that helped with the Tremec's famous missing of 3rd gear.

I never have a problem with reverse as long as I shift to 1st gear first.

The third gear issue in the Mustang is because of the massive reach to get the shifter in third. I rolled my seat up a little to keep it from happening. Gonna get a short throw this year.

Putting a new shifter on the Fusion won't help, you still have the same connection between the shifter and trans. Same trans internals. I have had this problem with every manual trans vehicle have owned, mainly in colder temps.

So you don't have that problem at all anymore? i'm skeptical.

You're probably right about the performance shifter. it just seems like the stock one is so rubbery, having it be a little more precise would help. I don't recall having that problem with my '00 Cougar, and that was a very nice-feeling shifter.

I shift into first then reverse - this method has worked like a charm in all my manual trans cars.

It's about 10F here right now and it's a royal PITA to get my I4 manual into reverse. I'll try the "1st-first" trick and clutching in-between. Thanks all. BTW - The balky reverse makes rocking the car when stuck in snow with its crummy stock tires practically impossible.

the stock tires are crap!!!! i took my custom wheels off for the winter because of the tires but i think next year i will just leave them on because they cannot be any worse than the stock ones.

All it is, is a gear alignment issue. When you stopped your car the gears where not perfectly aligned to go in reverse. Same with going from reverse to torward. Metallicat is right, let out on the clutch slightly while moving the shifter it will pop right in. This is a charactoristic of most standard shifts. I've driven many standards up to and including semi trucks!

On my brother's f150(i have the auto fusion) i would just leave the car in reverse when i shut it off and not fully stop to go back into forward. Tho it to had the famous missing 3rd gear :(

I've thought about doing that. i like to leave it in neutral though. makes for one less step when i'm warming up the car. :D Plus i might want to put a remote start in there sometime.
