Hey guys, I’m new to the forum, and have been looking at buying a later model Fusion with the 2.5 engine, preferably 2013 or newer. I grew up driving Fords my whole life, so I do know what to expect with maintenance and other aspects, though I don’t have any experience with Fusions in particular. With that said, when shopping around, what are some of the common issues, weak points, or shortcomings to beware of? I always change all the oils and fluids after buying a used car, just so I know when it’s been done, and it’s good to go for a while. Any tips, pointers, or other advice is greatly appreciated.

Hi T_W and welcome to the Ford Fusion Club. There are no particular Fusion specific issues to look for. Just all the normal used car buying warnings and caveats. Just for starters:

• Ask for all service records (be wary if none/few are available).
• Take at least one extensive test drive. Not a drive around the block or two
• Check engine bay and under car for leaks (be wary if everything is very wet/filthy or suspiciously clean).
• Check all fluids for proper maintenance, color etc. (and change when you buy, as you stated).
• If it is an AWD vehicle, that includes the PTU, which can be a weak point in many AWD vehicles.
• Check all systems for proper operation. Electrical, brakes, steering, transmission, all lights etc. etc. etc. Just had a member on another forum asking for help because he discovered the day after he purchased his used car, that the taillights do not work. He checked the brake lights before buying, but not the taillights.
• Check tires for tread life remaining. A new set of tires needed immediately will add ~$1,000 to your purchase costs.
• All the other...etc...etc...etc's I am sure you also already know.

The one warning I would give: If this will be the newest vehicle purchase you have made in some years, I would recommend you take a quick look through portions of the Owners Manual to acquaint yourself with the tech in the car. That would include the SYNC system, Climate Controls and other Driver Information Center controls, options and features available.
Modern vehicles have far more computer tech than only 10 years ago. And if you are not familiar with how it works and how to check how it works, you could get some unpleasant surprises after you buy, when you discover a major system or two does not work correctly.

go to an independent shop have them look at the brakes. bet you'll need them and maybe rotors. Pull the plastic shield that covers the bottom of the motor and look for wetness. If it's a ford dealer have them update sync.
If you have the slightest dought run away. Ask about an extended warranty. fords have bad tranies and motor blocks are known to crack. If water pump goes they have to pull motor I believe to replace it
