Thinking about getting a K&N drop in filter for my 06 Fusion SE V6 and was wondering if it was worth it? I had a drop in filter in my 04 Sport Trac and could not tell any difference in performance. What are your opinions on the K&N filter? I also need to change the oil this week and was thinking about using Mobile 5,000. Has anyone used this and if so how do you like it? Thanks for the help.

I like mine. If I don't get any performance, I know I get MPG's... If I don't even get that, it's worth it for the sound :)

MPG increase with k&N? I highly doubt it. Can any of you find a test from a reputable source proving that K&N filters increase MPG?

real world expierence... had one in my 97 tbird, gain 3mph in the 3.8... had one on my 99 contour, got 2 mpg...

look into the Fram Air Hog, I am getting one, my friend has one in his Cavalier and
he replaced his K&N with it and while it's about the same in performance, it cleans the
air better and there is no oiling after you clean it.

I've actually had K&N's on all 4 vehicles (all Ford) that I've owned in my life (2 F150's, one Taurus SHO, and my current Fusion). I notice a beefier sound on acceleration with every single one of them, but I sure as he** don't notice mpg or acceleration improvements. Acceleration certainly isn't DECREASED with the K&N, but my MPG's have always been affected NEGATIVELY by 3-5mpg on average.

A cold air intakes? Had them on both of the trucks. I noticed a BIG difference in throatiness, HUGE acceleration gains, but also paying the price with HUGE mpg drops.

This is just my first hand observation. I have a K&N for my Fusion but I don't think it's been in my car for more than 5 days before I ripped it out and threw it on the garage shelf.

You don't actually lose any MPG with it technically maybe like .2% at max. The problem is when you have the cold air intake your pressing the gas harder to hear that sound, and as hard as you try not to press it, now that the sound is there your automatically going to press harder on the accel. If you have the MPG guage in your fusion watch what a little bit of acceleration does to your avg. MPG.

My rule of thumb. "If it lets in more air it will probably let in more dirt. Is 1-2 hp worth destroying a engine?"

K&N is just a hoax. People hear the name and instantly think performance. Well, it's just not true. They do let more dirt in, it's just logic. If more air comes in, don't you think the more air is going to be more dirty? Do you really think you are going to feel 1-2 horsepower increase in a car this size? I think not. If you really want increase, buy a CAI and a cat-back exhaust. That's probably the only way to gain noticeable increases in performance w/out supercharging or turbo, or nitrous. But then you're still opening your engine up to more pollutants. Also, just use the Motorcraft synthetic blend as it's really good oil. Mobil1 is just a name also. Granted it's excellent oil, but no better than any other SL rated oil.

you guys are funny.. mechanics or not, i had 2 cars with over 100k on them which had kn filters.. they got better fuel mileage and could care less if its giving me more hp...

maybe my engines where dirty, but over 100k each with kns in for almost their entire life spans and they still start up like new and heck, no burning either...

a CAI and cat back is gonna net your shit, because you still have the middle bottleneck restricted... get some headers.. then your talking.
