The fusion draws its roots from the X-Type platform. However, they are not the same. The X-Type/Mondeo is CD132, which is based on the CDW27 (Contour, Mystique, Cougar). Which leads us to the CD3xx series, which is where our cars come from. (Milan/Fusion/MKZ/Mazda6...and quite a few others)

I know quite a bit about the X-Type since I had an 02 2.5L 5 Speed Manual for a while. Great car, handled like a BMW, Interior was pretty good too, but the AWD drivetrain was EXTREMELY unreliable. That's one of the reasons I opted not to have AWD in my Milan.
