So, i was doing the resonator mod and noticed our ride come with the hydrocarbon trap. Our the pcm's in these rides touchy like the new mustang where it leans out when you take it out or will the pcm adjust for the newly found power? If the pcm leans out, do the tuners have a program to take advantage of removing the trap?

yeah, i want some more info on this. for those that don't know, if you open your air filter box and look up inside toward the TB, you see the mass air sensor and then behind that you have this honeycomb looking thing. that is the hydrocarbon trap. it helps with emmissions, but obviously it is quite the obstruction. the questions are will it make the mixture too lean, etc. Bob, i think this is one for you!

you would think that it would rob power, but when the new stang came out 5.0 mustang did a dyno run and the stang lost power when it was removed , so id leave it in. when i put a CAI on my stang i left out the wire mesh screen that was in the old air box, and when i dyno it without the screen i lost 2.9 hp. i put the screen back in and had a total gain of around 8.4 hp from cai. the screen and the hydro trap kinda filter the air so it flows in the intake more straight, theres another term for that , but i cant think of it right now.

on the stang forums (they are like the only people online to do this) it goes back and forth. they actually say that they talked to a ford tech and he said, to sum it up, if you put a CAI in there, leave the trap in, otherwise it causes too much variance and it will throw a code. If you take the trap out, then leave the paper filter in. I mean, you can take both out as long as you have a tuner to fix the mixture so it doesn't run too lean, but apparently if you don't have a CAI, you can take it out....here are the links to the discussions i've been looking at. I might talk to the tech while I am here (getting a pcm reflash on my transmission!)

without a tune, the mustang loses power with the trap taken out, what i'm wondering is if the fusion pcm is sensitive like the 05-07 mustang. If it's like the old pcm, the computer will adjust for the engine running to lean, and there you will see you're power gain. If the pcm can adjust we would see a couple hp in power but loss in torque most likely. but if a tune is needed i would just leave it in.
