From the Mazda3 forum, I learned that the 2.3 in the Mazda developes 160hp at 6500rpm and has a 7100rpm rev limiter. Ok, the Fusion 2.3 generates 160hp at 6250rpm and it has a 6700rpm rev limiter. Why the difference? They both use the exact same engine, right?

Metallicat: I thought that but when I drive them both, our Milan seems to have a little more torque down low (under 2000 rpm ).
When my daughter's Mazda 3 2.3 gets below 2000, it seems to labor. Maybe the Mazda cam timing is a little on the retarded side, which would make it pull harder, upstairs. Both cars are 06.

Is your Milan an auto? In my manual Fusion, I swear there is almost no torque below 2000 rpm. Below 1800, in particular, it is pathetic, even scary at times if you are trying to accelerate in traffic.

What typical/average 4 banger makes any torque below 1800 rpm?

The engines are basically the same, but are tuned differently, hence the different torque and hp curves. The top end may or may not also be different. Using different (or no) VVT systems and other top end systems on the V6 is a big part of different power bands and max hp/tq between the different cars that use it.

Both cars have the automatics. Both cars have the same final gear. The Milan has about a two inch taller tire.(Milan=225/50/17)
(Mazda 3 = 205/50/17).

That's only about 8/10" difference in tire height (4/10" on top, 4/10" on bottom) :)

You are right: My eye ball doesn't work as well as the measuring stick. :)
