Ford, DaimlerChrysler steady
Meanwhile, Ford sold 1% more cars and trucks for the month, bringing the total to 289,449 vehicles -- the No. 2 U.S. automaker's first sales increase of the year. Car sales rose 9%, while trucks fell 3%. On an adjusted basis, sales came in shy of analyst targets.
Ford's top-selling F-Series truck saw a 3% decline along with the company's stable of traditional SUVs. But the redesigned Mustang continued to turn in stellar sales numbers, up 80% to 14,470 cars.
"We're pleased with the overall result this month," said Steve Lyons, head of Ford's North America sales. "On the car side, we are benefiting from the new products we introduced late last year."
Ford is looking for a new crop of sedans, like the Fusion, to help trigger more sales in the coming months, but some analysts and industry observers have their doubts that the fresh models can stem fading deliveries. See full story.
DaimlerChrysler (DCX: news, chart, profile) sold 238,274 cars in trucks last month, with the Chrysler division selling 220,032, a 5% jump. The luxury Mercedes-Benz division turned in a 4% rise to 18,242 vehicles.
Chrysler announced plans to offer an employee discount program that will officially kick off on July 6.
Ford shares added 7 cents to finish at $10.31 while DaimlerChrysler shed 3 cents to $40.48.
