Default Turn signal bulbs- 3157 vs. 3457 vs. 4157

Can someone tell me the difference between the bulbs? Our cars show - front turn signal 3457, rear turn signal 4157. However, as I look for chrome bulbs to replace them with I see 3157 is a replacement for both. What gives? And why would Ford/Mercury have two diff. bulbs. I am guessing it has to do with the brightness of the bulb, but why have diff. ones, use the brightest for both.

I think the second digit in the number is the color. I'm using 3057s in my front turn signals, those are clear.

[/quote]I was changing a signal light on a truck at work the other day, and I had 3157's in clear and 3157 NA, which were amber.

I emailed Sylvania and got a response pretty quickly. The differences are minor , but they do not recommend using one for the other.

Good Morning Jeff,
Thank you for your inquiry. Though parts 3157, 3457, and 4157 look similar, they are made to different operating specifications and are not considered interchangeable. We recommend that you replace with the same part number that was used as original equipment. With that said, here are the operating specifications for each of the three part numbers listed:

Lamp Filament Voltage Wattage Lumens
3157 Minor 14 8.26 37
3157 Major 12.8 26.88 402
3457 Minor 14 8.26 37
3457 Major 12.8 28.54 502
4157 Minor 14 8.26 37
4157 Major 12.8 28.54 402

Sincerely,

what difference would it make? i installed the 3157 chrome bulbs for both front and rear.. not happy with the brightness of course but i think its coz of the chrome layer on top of the bulb.

There is the difference, in brightness (and the chrome doesn't help). You can see that the 3457 has more wattage & lumens. The 3157 & 4157 have the same lumens (as each other), but different wattage. And actually if you look in our Milan owners manual it shows th 3157 as the replacement bulb for the rear even though my car has 4157's in the rear now.
