First Road Tip in the Fusion !
« on: July 25, 2010, 09:58:28 PM »
Okay so today i drove from Windsor to Ottawa (about 800KM's) and here is what I think.

Absolute comfortable ride, can't complain about the seating and how I was situated, definitely made the 9ish hours of driving enjoyable, yet alone bearable. My upgraded sound system helped out a lot over the windows open (i have a opinionated question about that) and provided music all the way there.

I gotta say though with the new mufflers, there is some definite 2 - 2250 RPM drone, at least for me. I mean i dont mind it in city driving but constant all trip was a bit much. How can I fix this?

MPGS - According to the internets, the v6 fusion should be averaging 28MPG , and i was absolute DEAD on 28 MPG all trip (8.3 L / 100KM) .. is this OK, i mean if the internet says it .. lol. I swore i should've been getting more. Regardless, I left with a full tank, got a bit past Toronto on 1/2 a tank, brought it back up to 3/4 full, than I made it to Ottawa with a little under 1/4 of a tank, SO, i guess you could say i used at LEAST 1 full tank of gas.

Overall, couldn't be happier. Did a few trips in my old car and it wasn't as much fun as this. Will be doing another trip in 2 weeks, should expect the same results !

As for my question, FROM EXPERIENCE , or what you think - Do you get better MPG driving with the windows UP or DOWN with the A/C on ? Mythbusters did this if anyone watches it, for those who didn't, what do you think? I dont care for either / or, but i'd be interested to do the trip back with just the a/c on and windows up.

Thanks for sharing your road trip experience.  It's a bit too hot in my area for a windows down road trip, but I might try this myself in the fall to see what numbers I get.

As too MPG, how fast did you have the cruise locked in at?  As for the AC vs windows.... I believe to be negligible.  Just keep the AC set to a comfortable setting, I keep mine at 23C, that way it is not freezing extremities (feet & hands), and is not so cold that when getting out to 32C, not a complete shock.

Mine also has a drone from the exhaust, and if no stereo would be thought inducing when in the car for longer than 6 hours

Before Toronto i was cruising at 115 km/h .. after Toronto there isn't as much OPP patrolling highways and the overall highway speed literally averages out at around 125 km/h or you'll be slowing down traffic, lol. So i was doing 130 for at least a few hours , give or take 5km/h here and there up and down with the traffic, i do know that speeding is first (bad) and second reduces MPGs drasitcally.

A/C i had on and off depending on traffic flow and how I felt , i keep it set at 22.

I know the highways you speak of all too well ;)  130 is decent in TO.  128 outside of TO is my max.  If you were doing those speeds then you got good mileage.  I usually average 28-30mpg depending on the cruise setting.  If at 110, 30-31 mpg.  Anything over, it of course drops.  AC only seems to kick it down 1-1.5mpg depending on usage.

Give me enough notice and I'd be interested too...

As for the speeds you guys run on the 401... only when I'm trying to shake the rice from my rear end (The rice tends to find my car attractive for some reason :x)

Maybe the SVT badge has something to do with it.

I was toying about putting V-TEC Killa on mine but I don't want it keyed up.

But they could be trying to ask you how the body kit fits so well on the Fusion when theirs are falling off.

Theirs are falling off...  because they are too low and cannot avoid curbs.  Every Honduh I see has severe curbage on the body kit.  Maybe the 50s - 70s curb feelers should come back... ;)

Let me know when you guys head down to Windsor.

gas mileage you're referring to, could have been better if you werent going so fast.  I set the cruise to literally 100-105 max when im doing long distance trips.  I have no intention of ever getting pulled over again, and I have a comparo with a friend of mine to see who gets the better gas mileage, so i keep it slow.  My average is closer to 7.5 l/100 ish, and thats with the AC on.  My car also weighs far more than yours, and i have about 400 lbs of extra equipment to slow me down lol

I drove through Ontario recently into Detroit and I saw on the Canadian highways that there is a fine of $10,000 for going 50kms over. Is this for real? What if a person is from the states and gets that fine, do the have to pay it?

Never bought fuel in liters before either, but those ketchup chips were great. Never ate those before.

Best was 534.9 miles to the tank at 33.9 AVG MPG.

Most certainly is very real. Your car also gets impounded and you lose your license immediately for seven days.  If you are travelling through our country you are subject to our laws.

After you pay the impound fees you can collect your car and await your court date. Here is where they determine your fine, which can be up to 10,000$ if the prosecution deems this to be reasonable.

There is no reason to be going that fast, and Ontario is doing its best to curb senseless speeding. It's known as "stunt driving" and carries a punishment worse than drinking and driving.

Yeah our laws on cracking down on speeders is pretty strict. Actually when I got pulled over doing 136 km/h in my grand prix , i already had an accident on it (4pts to my record :( ) and this woulda put me @ 8 suspending my license, luckily i got a mom of a OPP officer who felt extremely bad for me and gave me a 15 km/h over / 52$ tick opposed to a $240 / 30 over ticket. WOO. Won't go that fast again, unless you gotta thru Toronto lol!

I'm going to dull down my cruise speed and see what happens. I expect the same results but whatever, worth the effort !

P.S. - Ketchup chips used to be 1000000x better until lays changed how they taste. I dislike them now.

+1 on the Ketchup chips.... back in the Hostess days, they were awesome.  Not anymore :( Maybe it is just us growing up

I have reined my speeding in somewhat too... never much more than 130kph now ;)  AT least in Toronto.  When outside I set the cruise at 125kph and (knock on wood) have been left alone.

What's  the number for the gendermaries OPP constabulary? I want to call them and inform them that I was traveling at the rate of around 200 km/h in my high performance 4 cylinder Milan up and down the Canadian highways. LOL.

Ride home was the same, basically. Got 8.0L/100KM all the way home, with the fans and/or A/C on most of the trip, cruise set @ 120km/h , higher in some parts of the 401. Gotta say i'm thoroughly impressed with the mileage from this V6 and look forward to many trips in the future. I know i'm young and early in my car owning life but i can say right now that i'll be a long life Ford customer let alone Fusion owner for a long time to come
