X-CAL 3 STEEDA
« on: July 23, 2010, 10:52:35 PM »
Hi Guys,
I bought a SCT X3 from STEEDA and I am having some trouble getting the car tuned. I selected Program>>Stragety Tune>>and Selected all the options that I am supposed to select... I'm having trouble however, when I start the car, it acts "funny" and I get the Litte Wrench Error and a CEL... Does anyone know what the problem is? I thought I was supposed to use CUSTOM TUNE and my tune would be there, however, there isn't one in that file... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It appears that I should have a Tune selection under my CUSTOM section, however i don't because the people at Steeda... I have had such bad luck with them with this damn tuner, this one I ordered online, let them know exactly what I had and put in my PCM code... Anyway, I think I got it figured out now... I will call Steeda again on Monday.

Yes, you should select "Custom Tune" and there should be two tunes listed there. I also has an issue with Steeda where they only sent me one tune loaded with the XCal... They should be able to just email you the tunes and you can download them onto your XCal, and then into your vehicle...

Okay I got my 93 tune from Steeda today, and I have to say… If i'm supposed to feel like my balls are going to fall off when I step on the gas, then that's definitely not the case…not even close. To be honest, it barely feels like a change… now, I have half a tank of 89 octane, so could I be missing power from the extra 4 octanes?

Are you planning on using 93? I don't know about SoCal but up here you can't get 93 anywhere.

If everything is under control, you're not going fast enough.

Using the 93 tune, you should have 93 octane in the tank.   Try using the 87 tune.

When I run either tune with the correct octane, my car jumps when I hit the gas.

Hey Fusion FF,
I will switch gas as soon as I can, i may have to drive around a bunch but if it kills me by the end of the weekend i should be able to get a full tank… Is it odd that Steeda didn't ask me if i had a CAI or a Magnaflow? They should have right?

Yeah, I got a call from Steeda before they loaded up the custom tunes asking what mods that I had.  Maybe give them a call and they can email you some updated tunes with your mods info.

Hey Guys,
Has anyone ever used tunes from *****5 STAR TUNING?***** It's $60.00 for each tune, Mike (the dude at 5 STAR) said they give increased power over what most other tunes are on the market. I have the Steeda 93' Octane tune right now and to be honest, it kind of feels slower now, I don't know if they screwed up making the tune, but I'm so tired of dealing with them on this tuner.

I hated the steeda tunes.  I just put it back to stock and sold the tuner..wasn't for me.  I don't know if any of the tunes are really that great to be honest.  I'd ask the guy what experience he has w/ tuning the fusion first.  I've never heard of it, but I understand you need a dyno to do it correctly.

Hey Bigg, yeah right now I'm really regretting buying it. Kev said he uses Bama' Chips torque tune I don't know if they still make them but i'm going to give them a call and see if they have any tunes written for the device. Honestly it feels like my car was faster before the tune… It could be though that it's a 93 and I have 89 octane in there right now though, I don't know if it's those extra 4 octanes that make the difference but i'm going to fillup with a full tank of the 93' and try again.

Bama chips isn't around anymore.  I wouldn't run a 93 tune w/ 89 gas though..watch for detonation.  The 87 and 93 tune, to me..felt the exact same.

I too didn't notice much of a difference between the 87 and the 93 tunes on my V6. But I thought the difference between the 87 and stock was pretty noticeable! You really shouldn't be using 87 octane gas with a 93 octane tune! That might be what is making it feel slower, not to mention risking your engine...

Hi Bryan,

Sorry you are not enjoying your tune.  :(

First off, you should not have that 89 octane gas in there. You also may have an incorrect strategy code.

Try giving Gus a call. (Call our regular number and ask for him) He owns a Milan and swears by the Steeda tunes. He really is very good with them. He'll work with you and send you new tunes that will put a smile on your face.  ;)

Hi Larry,
I called Gus today but my phone call was never returned.
Here's my Information:

91 Octane ( more readily available in this area than 93)
Steeda CAI
Magnaflow Cat Back
Processor Code EXM1

**edit**
Larry I'm sorry I know that none of this is your fault, your sort of bringing it on yourself by always getting back to me quickly  :mica3speedy:… This past transaction with this tuner has really left a bad taste in my mouth… first with the shipping fiasco, and then getting a blank tuner when i reordered it from you guys.

Can you please see if Gus or the person who does it if they can create a new tune for me  with the above specs, I have a 3.0L V6, the processor code came off the sticker in the engine bay, i even removed my battery to verify it was the correct one… Is there somewhere else I should/can check for it? I would really like to have the tune this weekend, if that's possible can you have the person who does it e-mail it to me at bryan.garcia@me.com please. There is a place by my parents house that sells 93 and even 100 octane, but it's a little far to drive there every time to fill up 20 mins… (completely out of the way too). Please keep me updated…
Thanks,
Bryan Garcia

From what I've gathered discussing this with Gus this morning is that you called and spoke to Todd yesterday. You said you would wait the tune out at bit and agreed that you would put the proper gas in the car and run that before we changed tunes out. From what I'm hearing you did not request a call back from that conversation.

If you'd like me to take longer replying to you, I can if you'd like.  ;)

Hey Larry,
I called Gus around 11:45AM PST (I'm in California) because I had seen your post suggesting that I give him a call, I also wanted to switch my octane to 91' because the gas stations around me don't sell it, I have to drive out to go get 93 which really isn't worth it because it's really outta the way. Can he please make the tune for me, or give me a call so we can talk about the tunes.
I did talk to todd in the morning but right as I was hanging up the phone with him I got your post on here, and that's why I called back to speak with Gus. I also had some general questions for him about the tunes.
Thanks,

Bryan.

If your car is basically stock besides intake and exhaust you should be able to get a mail order tune pretty damn close. Best way to tune tho is to do it yourself and get a wideband.

One point to consider...

Prior to running the 91 tune that I do, I was running 91 gas for an entire month (4 fillups from the "Warning Of Doom") in my Fusion to try and ensure that I had as close to 91 octane in it when I switched things over.

Switching over as you described, I'm surprised that if you hammered the throttle after the reprogramming that you weren't getting some odd reactions from the car.

If you have a lower octane in the tank than what the tune you are running is, ex: (93 octane Steeda tune w/ 87 octane in the tank), it will run rough. That was one of the questions I specifically asked Steeda about before I bought mine. Conversely, if you have 91 or 93 octane in the tank and run an 87 octane tune, it will be fine.

I had trouble a little while back with my SCT X-CAL 2 tuner with Steeda tunes; didn't know if it was SCT's or Steeda's problem, but customer service from both was excellent. Steeda took care of their end of it rather quickly; Steeda re-sent me my tunes and it all worked out great.

I really enjoy the 93 tune. Here in NC, 93 octane is plentiful.

Sorry that 93 octane station is out of your way. But if you get this straightened out, you may find that that gas station isn't so out of the way after all.

Good luck!

Hmmm...I run the 91 performance tune on my 08 SEL i4 automatic and found the upgrade quite noticeable.
