I4 Spark Plug Torque (2006) specification discrepancy

I've searched this forum for "spark plug torque" and found nothing so I am posting...

Changing the spark plugs on a 2.3L 2006 SE here with 60,000mis on the clock.

There is a discrepancy in the spark plug torque specification for the 2.3L I4. The 2006 Ford shop manual (page 303-01A-4) calls for the following spark plug torque values:
12 Newton-meters
9 lb-ft

The Motorcraft spark plug box (part AYSF-32Y-PC or SP490 for the 4-pack) calls for the following spark plug torque ranges:
25-30 Newton-meters
18.0 to 25.3 lb-ft

That's over a factor of two difference!

Does anyone on the forum have an explanation? Note that the spark-plug box is none too accurate with its conversion between Newton-meters and lbs-ft. The spark-plug box values are also the highest torque I've ever seen for any spark plug in an aluminum-head engine. My two aluminum-head 3.0L Duratecs (two Taurii) call for 15 Newton-meters torque and my two aluminum-head 2.0L Zetecs (Contour and Focus) also call for 15 Newton-meters torque. Even my ancient cast-iron head 3.0L Vulcan called for 15 Newton-meters torque!

10-15 ft lbs.

i usually just do it by hand and make it enough so its just tight.

use your best judgment.

My 2006 service cd also says "12 Newton-meters 9 lb-ft". An older Mazda 6 Service cd says
10-24 N*m 8-17 ft lbs

do 10. if it feels loose. go up to 15.

check it after about... a day or two of driving. then after one week or so. then after about two.

if its not loose after that, its fine. i doubt you'll over torque it so dont worry about it.

Re: I4 Spark Plug Torque (2006) specification discrepancy

The 2006 Fusion/Milan/Zephyr Workshop Manual Section 303-07A-1 shows a torque value of 12 Nm (106 lb-in) for the spark plugs. Torque the bolts for the ignition coil-on-plugs to 10Nm (89 lb-in).

Re: I4 Spark Plug Torque (2006) specification discrepancy

OK, so I finally did this job and torqued the new plugs to 12N-m per the Ford shop manuals.

Interestingly, the old plugs were essentially unworn. They gapped precisely the same as the plugs going in - 0.050". Other than getting the original plugs loosened before they became permanently welded to the cylinder head, there was really no reason they couldn't have gone another 40k mis. FYI

What is the change interval, anyway? Thought I read 100k miles.

Also, anyone with access to torque specs please PM me. Seriously need some help here.
