Commuter Car Suggestions?

I currently own a 2013 Ford Fusion SE with 7,300 miles. However, my commute is 100 miles to work and back everyday, which will add up to around 27,000 miles/year with the commute alone, something I don't want to continue doing more than a year.

I do not want to move closer and I do want to purchase a second vehicle that is decently fuel efficient. I would also prefer something that I can install a rack on the roof of the vehicle for kayaks etc.

Do you guys have any suggestions? I was thinking along the lines of a Jetta TDI based on long life expectancy and 45-50 mpg diesel, with still a little bit of ass to have some fun in. But maybe there's something else better for the job?

Thanks

My wife drives a 2013 Ford Focus sedan with the sports appearance package and she averages around 40-42MPG highway with an easy foot. Her commute is almost identical to yours, as she drives about 48 miles each way. At 13 months, she rolled over 30K. She's now almost at 45K and it's still on original brakes and tires.

The 2014 Jetta TDI Value Edition is the only recommendation I'd make in terms of a diesel, if you don't care about packages and options. If you do, I'd start weighing the cost of fuel (MPG advantages) over the sticker price; similarly what you'd do for hybrid ownership.

Also, I'd look into the price of diesel. In my state, as well as some others, diesel is the cost or even higher than the cost of premium fuel. ...just another factor to consider.
