2012 Altima 2.5 Short Take

I am driving a 2012 Altima 2.5 w/CVT while my Fusion is at the bodyshop. Most significant difference is the CVT and the keyless ignition, which both take some getting used to.

What I do like is on the highway at 70 MPH it's turning just under 2000 RPM. On my I4 manual it's a frenzied 3500+ RP at the same speed. Also, the MPGs are a lot better. I'm averaging over 30 MPG in this thing on my daily stop and go, under 40 MPH commute while my Fusion is around 23 MPG. Under these conditions the CVT keeps the car under 2000 RPM, with most driving done between 1200 and 1500 RPM, crazy. The car is quite a bit quicker than my 2.3 w/manual. The center console is nicely upholstered and the lid slides for and aft as well.

What I don't like is the motor sounds like a Hoover vacuum, and the driving position and seats are not as comfortable as my Fusion. The stock stereo sounds horrible, and the ergonomics are not too great. Buttons for the trip computer and start/stop are hidden behind the wiper and turn signal stalks, and the trunk release cannot be seen while sitting in the driver's seat. The car also has fairly poor visibility over the shoulder for lane changes and the smaller side view mirrors don't help. It does ride a bit harsher, and I think the steering effort is way too light.

A new Altima is coming soon. Anyone drive one of these lately? What's your impression of it?

just bought one of those and i like it. your right the cvt is a little strange at times but after a 1000 or so miles you don't realize that it doesn't have gears anymore.

The engine is a little loud when the car is cold but i don't find it much louder then the milan, but the milan had a catback on it. as for the visibility i don't think it is any worse, but I'm tall and don't normally have that problem in cars.

the stereo is crap compared to the milan and is what I miss the most. but the fuel econ is way better. almost 7 mpg better, at least for me.
