My wife is about to purchase a 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse. I am wondering why this company is not selling well the the US (I looked at their financial statements). What is it about Mitsubishi (mainly the eclipse) that make it a bad car to purchase?

First, the market for FWD coupes isn't really all that large. Second, the Eclipse gets atrocious gas mileage (especially in 6 cylinder models) and doesn't perform as well as the competition. Having said that, I don't think there are any glaring quality faults with the Eclipse. The current model has been out for a long, long time. So they've had a while to work out the kinks.

So to answer your question, nothing makes them "bad" cars. They just don't stand out in any way over more established competitors.

i have owned three "shit"subishi's. 2 eclipses and a diamante there flag ship car. every single one engine and trans wise lasted but the stupidest stuff would break. i had all the rear bushings fail on my diamante befor 100k and the eclipses trim panels would fall off when you hit a bump or slammed the hatch. I personally would never own another one. If she wants a fwd 2 door sports car get a kia or hyunda or even the last model year of the cougar they could be done up right.

as far as I am concerned the Mitsubishi Eclipse died in 1999. They really screwed over that model (which was one of the most popular especially the 95-99s) with their redesign and no turbo model offering in 2000. The new body style is butt ugly (the convertible is ok I guess). Actually out of all the Mitsu's... the Eclipse is the only one I wouldn't even consider.

At first, the car had blacked out tail lights (previous owner did a poor job with black spray paint) and a fart cannon (ricey muffler). I requested they replace the tail lights and the muffler. Also, needed to replace one of the fog lights (the lens was broken). Wifey went to look at it today, and they had put a small tipped muffler (like that on a small car like a Focus, and I am going by what my wife told me). I know the factory tip on that style Eclipse is about 3" or more in diameter. Also, I did a CarFax on the car, and it had two accidents that were in excess of $500 of repair each, and one resulted in a deployed air bag. Car has 112,000 and the dealer is asking $11,500. I refuse to allow my wife to pay that for that car, but she wants it sooooo bad. So, I plan to haggle the price with the dealer. What do you all think is a max and min price for the car???? I am thinking $9,000 max.

I persudaed my wife to wlak away from the Eclipse. 2 accidents and one resulting in an airbag deployment isn't worth that purchase. Thanks for the input, guys!! :)
