I went and drove a new SRT Challenger w/6-speed MTX. It was a neck snappin', terd squeezin' torque fest. My god that SOB is an angry automobile. I got back in my little 6 popper Fusion and as BB King says.....The thrill is gone baby.. :(

I guess I like the idea that "Joe" helped build a classic car and not "Machine A32561" which built the new ones. Maybe it is the culture that surrounds the classic Muscle Car. I watched an episode of American Muscle Car on Netflix last night, and the guys they were talking about something that NEVER happens today...

That people would line up to see the new models each year at a dealership, the excitement of those new cars..... tell me if that happens today? (the internet ruins this aspect I know)

Barring "RARE" one off factory cars and limited production supercars.... the fact is that other "normal" cars, 40 years from now, will be worthless. Yet the "classics" will still be sought after. It truly was "the golden age" of the American auto industry.

IMO of course...
I agree 100% and I think that's why these are built. Many of us would love to own one of the real classics but the 200-300k for one is out of reach. The value of these depends a lot on how the fuel deal goes over the next 20 years. These may well be Detroit's last attempt or opportunity to build something for the kid in all of us. We've been considering a restomod and really that's all these are...with a few new toolings of course. It's kind of the same as Gibson guitars building the R8/R9 Les Paul.....can't everybody have a real 58-59 Les Paul.

Restomods are awesome but still different than the new ones. I am all for saving all the classic cars in anyway that they can. Some are just too far gone to be done themselves... but they can live on with the parts they can give up. That was the situation with the link "Old Mercury Parts Car" in my signature. The entire front subframe/radiator support was paper thin. But it lives on with all the awesome parts it had on it that are now on the "Old Mercury" in the signature.

Its not always about fastest. As a ford guy my whole life, and even a mustang lover i cant get over the challenger either. Its the most beautiful car on the road IMO (american car anyway). A cobalt ss r neon srt would run circles around me but i wouldnt be caught dead in either.

EDIT - Just read this over after posting. Want to make it clear that all is good and I am only discussing things as everyone else is. Don't want anyone misunderstanding what I wrote, why I wrote it or taking anything out of context.

Hi HALO. :wavey: Gee guys, stating that speed isn't everything is not exactly the equivalent of discovering the cure for cancer. This isn't rocket science, brain surgery, rocket surgery or brain science. :eek4: :lmao: Of course it isn't all about speed and acceleration and who is fastest. And of course, among many other variables an owner has to like the way their car looks. However, it seems we need a mini reality-check just to remind everyone how we got to the speed subject in the first place. In addition to the Challengers looks you were the one who brought up power and speed when Big Jim mentioned trying a Mustang GT with the track package and you stated:
It would have to be something special after that 470hp 392 Hemi...
I ain't kiddin' ya Jim, it was like being a kid again. Brought back a lot of teenage memories for me. The Toxic Orange paint job was so damn ugly with the black stripes...it was sick, evil & angry man
Let's be serious, while you are discussing the cars looks, you are certainly not discussing how the Hemi looked in the engine bay there. :lmao: You were discussing how fast it is.

Then later you added:
If/when I buy anything of the sort it will be a sunny day, weekend vehicle and not a daily driver. I can't get by the rear of the Mustang. When they slanted the tail assembly that just ruined it for me.

IMO this is just pervertedly sick...

I'd be more interested in straight away more than corning. 470HP is a whale of a place to start modding. 500 plus is very real. Wife and I have been considering a restomod anyway....
In addition to looks, I would say we are talking about speed there.

Then:
bbf, you know I'm an old man and I don't care what will out run what....it's all in the claiming, lying & talking about it.
Something felt really good about this car. Interior was rather sparse if not utilitarian in feel. It was very down to business. Kind of like pound cake, it's just cake, no frosting, sprinkles or other bs, just cake. I really liked that about the car. The lines are flat on the exterior, fit & finish was superb....and like I said earlier, it was torque heaven. There's really just not much it needs and IMO the car is very rustic and lacked the over the edge refinement that some of the other retro cars have going. It just felt really good, drove great and 470hp (regardless of the weight) was a REAL neck snapper compared to the Fusion.

See, I'm gonna lay this $100 bill on the dash....if you can grab it while I'm changing gears...you can have it....

You ain't gettin' that $100 bill.....
Again, in addition to how the car looks, you are certainly discussing speed and acceleration. So after Big Jim brought up the Mustang GT and how if you were impressed with the speed of the Challenger, the Mustang would really get your blood flowing, we were simply pointing out the performance statistics.

Also, I want to mention that in my replies I have certainly complemented the Challengers looks. And even though I think the Mustang is a better looking car (my opinion, of course), I have never talked down the Challenger, unlike some people here have with the Mustang. In fact, I did not even insult the Camaro, I only mentioned that it would be third in this list of three. In fact, I never insult any other members car, wheels, color choice, lowering choice (or wife, house, etc.). That would be rude and unnecessary :hugglez: Bottom line? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so there is no right or wrong answer when it comes to which car looks better to each of us.

Just don't want anyone to be accused of stating something they did not and wanted to bring it back to earth and remind the late comers that you brought up the speed variable, so that is why it was being discussed. It's not like the rest of us think speed is the Holy Grail. Heck, if we did, we would not own Fusions/Milans/MKZ's. :lmao:

Still hope you can get that dream Challenger sooner rather than later my friend.

Good luck.

Do I have to come right out and say it on a Ford forum? The new Mustang is ass ugly. I don't care if it's got 700hp and runs 225mph.....the car is still ass ugly. 05-what 09? I'm ok with that....but new...I don't think so.

Now as for as power. Instead of just saying how much it weighs and "probably handles" poorly and this & that, go strap yer azz in the seat of one them, pop the clutch and see what you think then...and for those wondering, the car handle IMO just as good as my Fusion when it was stock. Especially for what the car is...

I liked what I heard, felt and the package it's wrapped in is one the sharpest things on the road.

Hi HALO. :wavey: Me, pop a gasket over Internet discussions? :lmao: Nah, this is small potatoes and all just a fun discussion. Forgive me, but I don't recall at the moment, how old are you again, old man? Seems like you may need a sedative and a nap yourself though (I keed. I keed :lmao:).

Don't know about anyone else here, but I am speaking from experience. Have driven it. Have been behind the wheel of all the top (and lower) performance versions of the current Mustang, Camaro and Challenger.

In my line of work, it helps to take the time to explain things in detail, especially in writing, so I have a habit of doing it here. But I guess in some cases I should know better. So in this case it is my fault. I should have merely performed the FFC status quo and made my replies "cute", insulting and short by simply stating that in my opinion the Challenger looks good in pictures, but in real life is a bloated, oversize, ill handling pig (for a ponycar wannabe). Wow, a big dollar, rear wheel drive, "high performance" vehicle that might handle as well as a stock FWD Fusion? Not to mention its warmed over 300/Charger four door sedan cockpit/interior? It would be like week of sex with a supermodel with AIDS and herpes. Some good looking pictures but a lot of regrets later. How can anyone resist that? Of course, since I was being polite I would not say that before so pretend I did not just say it now. Once again, I keed. :Hide: :lmao:

However, I did not feel any overriding need to insult the subjective opinions of my fellow forum members concerning what is attractive or not. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I realize none of our opinions are important to much of anyone other than ourselves and hopefully our real life family and friends. So I stated that I think it is a good looking car. Kind of like telling an acquaintance in a face-to-face encounter that their wife is beautiful and their kids are so cute when they whip out pictures. :loco: :lmao:

Just the way I roll, as they say (again, whoever they are). Ironically, not everyone always seems to feel the same way or return the courtesy. But that is okay since it's the Internet and can not be taken personally.

In all seriousness though, I know you love the car, so I am still hoping you get that dream Challenger sooner rather than later my friend. :csweeney:

Carry on men.

Good luck.

PS - Again, for the reading and humor impaired, this is all in good fun, so don't take anything personally. :dur:

Seriously though, we are still in the looking phase. Wifey seemed to like it fairly well over the other two as did I. There's still the restomod idea as well. We really like the 65-69 Impala, especially the convertible, but then there would be an issue of warranty with any restomod regardless it's stage of completion. I'm looking for a nice weekend driver. Something to toy with basically and be reliable enough to make all the East Tennessee rod runs in Gatlinburg & such. Coilovers, wheels & pipes would make instant toy and fairly reliable fun. Wife says the boat or (break out another thousand) has to go before we do anything and I tend to agree. If the kids didn't take it out it would never see any water. Just a money pit sitting in the backyard...

I'm with you Halo. I have not driven neither Mustang nor Challenger. The Mustang may be much more lighter, nimble, etc. But, there's just something about the Challenger. There's not one on every corner. I'll take my 392 Green with Envy! The torque is very addicting in a Hemi. My other ride is a 5.7 Hemi. Even at close to 5000 lbs, the 401 ft-lbs will lay you back in your seat. Changing 16 plugs every 30K miles = not so good :)

This is the most lively thread I've participated in since joining this forum. Now I know that I'm not the only one addicted to speed (or acceleration, I'm not sure which).

That addiction has cost me dearly in my younger days, both in the maintenance of a ride that tended to break when leaned on too hard too often as well as in insurance costs.

It's probably a good thing that I don't have a car today that performed as well as some of ones I had in the past, especially the Ranchero (400 rear wheel HP). The 442 was mostly stock with 350 HP at the crank and it still ran really strong. The 63 Chevy Impala Convertible was probably the most fun though, because no one expected it to run so strong. It would rev to 8 grand, so my favorite thing was to allow someone to stay even with me until they need to shift, then I would floor it and pull away, laughing all the way. I never dyno'd it, but I'm sure it approached 400 HP. And yes, it had a Muncie 4 speed trans. I played with all sorts of rear end gearing from 5.18 to 3.23, but liked it overall best with 3.70. 4.56 was fun too.

Enjoy yourself if you do get the Challenger. Try to keep the tickets down though.

Jim, the Impala has been on our radar for a long time. We went to a car show in Knoxville (2004-5) and the wife freaked out over a 65 restomod that was there and I really liked a 69. I would rather have something old but I don't know if it is realistic. The Challenger was a lot of fun and the wife liked it pretty well too. That's always a huge plus when it comes to spending 50 large.

What is your other ride Korey??!!

LOL...I think the torque is what really got my attention..."lay you back in the seat" is a mild understatement

My other ride is an '09 Aspen Limited 2wd. We bought it new, and it currently has 16k miles. It has the latest Gen VVT Hemi (as the new Rams), and rated 376/401. It surprises many. I really wish I had the factory tow package with 3.92 gears.
