Finally drove a Regal

Getting pretty disgusted with Ford's seeming inability to get the brake issue(s) on the Taurus fixed... so I went a drove a Regal the other day. Based on a 10 minute test drive, I'm pretty well sure I would've bought the Regal over the Taurus had they both been available. Smaller all around than the Ford, but very nicely put together. You'll be seeing a lot of these on the road once they get some inventory built up.

Don't get me wrong, the Fusion's just fine. But let's not make it out to be more than it is.

I completely agree.. it is what it is, a North American family sedan. And ill actually eat my words.. Per Consumer Reports "The all-new interior has improved fit and finish that's quite good overall, but not quite world class." LOL..

Not sure where I read that the Fusion's fit n finish is considered world class quality. I think I was mistaken and it was spoken about the Hybrid being world class in Fuel Economy and Technology. Forget i even posted!

So, it really comes down to personal preference or whatever..

As does any car purchase. On forums, we discuss our personal preferences, LOL.

I will say that I really dislike the rear end of the Regal. Looks way too much like the old Acura CL's. The crease/curvature down the middle looks like an ass.

Wow...Uh, ok.

The thing I meant to say is, that, for the most part, people are just talking about numbers or whatever...When I think personal preference, I'm thinking about all the things that aren't cost, horsepower, torque, or whatever-related to that sort of thing. I mean, to me, I prefer the exterior of the Fusion, the interior design of the Regal, the functionality of the Fusion, but the performance of the Regal...

I know what you meant. Just saying that if all personal preference was left out of discussions, you'd have like 1 post a day here

Like I said, I won't be buying either one of these cars. With the expanding offerings of hatches and wagons out there, I don't think I could ever justify going back to a sedan anyways. If I did and I had to shop Buick, I'd have a hard time justifying a loaded Regal over a mid-trim level Lacrosse.

I didn't say anything about leaving personal preference out...Uh,. I think we're getting away from the topic here.

Are you an older driver? I, for one, have no interest in ever buying a wagon or a hatch, and I really couldn't see myself driving a car over 3800lbs either...Maybe when I'm older and I need extra room, but, it's really not an option for me (ya know, my personal preference)...I guess considering all of the cars I've test driven over the last few months, including the Taurus and the Hyundai Genesis sedan, maybe I'd try riding in a Buick Lacrosse...just out of curiosity

I'm 31.

I have a large dog (and two small ones), two houses to upkeep and a baby due in March. The room/utility of a hatch or wagon makes my life much, much easier. It's the reason I sold my Milan. Got tired of having to swap cars with my wife just to run my dogs over to my folks' house before going out of town or making a Home Depot run. My OB has more power and gets much better gas mileage (in the city at least) than my 4 cyl/auto Milan and it has an MT. Cheaper to operate, slightly quicker and more fun to drive. Of course I paid almost $10k more for it than I did my used Milan.

Sometimes I kick myself for not buying a Ralliart Lancer Sportback. If it had an actual manual rather than the sissy automated manual, I probably would have.

I wonder if GM has the balls.
I doubt it. It would likely be priced pretty high (as the Regal already is) and would encroach on another GM wagon, the CTS (which isn't selling well as it is).

If they stop asking an arm & leg for this crap. I looked @ the regal online and considered one for future purchase. They are asking WAYYY too much money for that thing. It seems the fusion will stay the best value in it's class. (I don't want to hear about ANY Korean auto makers)

No, that's not my car...lol.

I was just sharing photos of the new CXL Turbo...and I happen to like that color, dammit!

Kinda, but you're exaggerating a lot.. :p It's really about what you're looking for and what you value (and if you're talking best value, I don't think the Ford Fusion is #1 BTW... :p Maybe #2).

First off, the Buick is selling this car as an entry-level luxury sedan, competing with the likes of the Acura TSX and not the Ford Fusion. I will say this, after sitting and driving in both a 2011 Fusion Sport and the 2011 Buick Regal (non-Turbo), that the price isn't so far off.

I'll just say that yeah, a loaded Fusion Sport will sell for around $31k-$33k (probably closer to $34k with AWD), and a loaded Turbo will be around $34-36k. Not a massive difference, but probably enough to pit them into direct competition. They are somewhat comprable in terms of performance. The Regal Turbo is slightly less quick, but I'm going to say that on paper (and from my test drive experience), the Regal has better grip, handling, and cornering especially with the available Drive Select feature that the Regal has.

The things that stand out for the Fusion is the avaialble BLIS, rear view camera, and SYNC system, ambient lighting may be a plus too. Buick definitely has the edge in having higher premium materials (nicer seats, more distinct style, and stitching), a better sound system (Harmon/Kardon), larger wheels, and OnStar.

So, it really depends on if you're looking for a good value with lots of goodies in an all-around good car (Fusion) or if you're trying to go just one notch higher (Regal)...and really, the price too is really just one notch higher, but it's hard to compare directly as the Regal gives you a really good way of configuring your options the way you like them.

Ya know, a lot of people think the Lincoln MKZ is wayy overpriced too, and that depends too when you're pricing out options. I think the MKZ starts at around $35k. I love the MKZ, but it was down to a loaded Regal Turbo at $35k and a base MKZ, I'd probably take the Regal Turbo. I'm also really excited about the Regal GS. Depending on how they price that bad boy, it could really be competitive in this particular segment

7.5 sec 0-60 would feel incredibly fast to me after my last 4 cars, LOL.
Yeah, the 2.3L doesn't really cut it unless you gun it all the time.. lol

I'll probably be happy with any car with at least 200hp. :p

In case you don't know what I'm referring to with my post LOL:

On topic, I wish my wife was open to more brands. For the price we paid for her now 3 year old ES350, we could have gotten a new Regal (ok, for a few grand extra). The power in the 350 is nice, though. She probably wouldn't have liked the performance of the non-turbo Regal.

There's probably not one car brand that I don't like. I like at least one car from every brand quite a lot...which, obviously makes new car decision making quite challenging...
