Jaguars?

Hey, does anyone know how reliable/good the 04-06 Jaguar S-types are?

I was just browsing around for old cars, and a local Jaguar dealership is selling a 04 Jaguar S-Type 3.0 with 60k miles for $16,900. I think that's steep, especially for a 3.0 (I should be able to knock it down to at least $15k) and I might not even be interested to buy it, but I was just gonna go for a quick test drive tomorrow evening.

Is it worth my time?

Here's some pics:

They look nice, that's about as far as it goes. It's over priced and VERY BORING to drive. The 3.0 is like driving a taurus..just a very blah car. I'm not sure how reliable they are but I'd bet not very since it's a jag.

You say they're very boring to drive--what did you drive?

I don't remember the year. It was an 02-04 Jaguar S type 3.0. The car had no personality. Acceleration was dull, handling was numb, braking was nothing special, and the J gate shifter was annoying. It was some time ago I had driven it but I'll never forget the drive because I was so disappointed with the car.

and your Milan 2.3?

Did you ask about my milan or the jaguar? I was certain you were asking about the jaguar. If you are interested in how a milan drives I'll be happy to go over it, but I will tell you that my milan won't cost almost 17k when it's 6 yrs old and has 60k miles. It will however still be a better car than the jaguar. My milan doesn't claim to be anything more than a midsize car. The jaguar however thinks it was able to compete with competitors like BMW. Not happening.

Yes, I was just asking you to compare the two.

and I already mentioned how the car in question is overpriced--that's out of the question, but I wouldn't think that it would make sense to compare the two cars anyway.

I meant, a comparison from a stock performance standpoint.

I interpreted that as you took offense to my review of the Jaguar. I apologize..but it's still an honest review. The Jag looks a little nicer, is more comfortable, and is faster as I have a 4 cyl. It stops there. My milan rides nicer and handles WAY better than the Jag. If you like the S type, consider a Lincoln LS V8. Same car but it'll cost less and have more power.

Isn't the LS like, a large car? I thought the S-type was on the smaller side.

Exactly what he said...everything is the same in all three cars, except for bodies.

The Tbird is a 2seater, while the LS and Jag are 4. The Jag 4.0 and the Tbird/LS 3.9 motor is the exact same motor as the Jag 4.0 (actually, it IS a jag motor) ... just a tad smaller.

All are RWD drivetrains. The bird will hold the value the most, since they are all convertibles and much more rare. A friend of mine had a 4.0 Jag and loved it for the first little while until everything started to break, few hundred here for this, few hundred there for that. It was getting to be too much that he hated the thing. Sensors everywhere started to go, nothing worked right, and the gas mileage from the 4.0 was terrible. Ended up trading it in for a 2006 civic and LOVES the civic way more lol.

The LS is cool too, always been a fan of the body, i think its got a very European look and they had enough get up and go to impress people ... even though they are a lincoln haha.

Tbird? Well, i have one - an older one actually (96 LX with the 4.6 V8). I love this car, but the new ones are still too "old" for me yet. Its a highway cruiser that does not offer anything fun for youthful drivers.

I liked the test drive a lot. I didn't drive the car that long as I had to meet up with a friend later that day. If I was interested, I told them I would probably call to make an offer or spend some more time with the car next week.

Some pics at the dealer:

I noticed that the dealer offered no warranty on the car and was trying to sell it AS-IS. Now, can a warranty be negotiated with and be established in the price? If I become interested, I was gonna offer $12,750 + 3 year warranty, 60 months w/ $1750 down payment + trade-in w/ net value est. $3000. If they go higher, I wonder if they could throw in a set of winter tires, wheel locks, and a 35% tint on the windows.

I almost want to wait and see if a 4.2L pops up in my neighborhood, particularly in black. It's my favorite color on the S-Type and I've seen some used 4.2's at good prices, but they're hundreds a miles away. The closest black 4.2L I've seen is near Chicago at $15k.

I doubt the dealer will offer any sort of warranty on a vehicle that old. Usually, warranties can only be purchased up to a specific time following the factory warranty ending.

For a 2004 model year, it's just not worth it for them. The car may have low KM's but its already 7 years old and things are going to start to go wrong with it. They shouldnt be selling it "as is" but at the very least certified and etested - if its being sold "as is" id be walking away very quickly.

IMO i think you should wait and find one with the V8... I think you'll be much happier. Besides, you wouldnt want to roll up beside one, have the owner look over and think "nice V6 jag....wimp." LOOL!

I was wondering, is it common or acceptable to negotiate for accessories and options in the dealer price? Like, if I wanted to offer $12,000 and they wanted $13,000, could I tell them that I would want a set of winter tires, wheel locks, and a 35% tint job included with the deal?

This would be awesome:

The S-Type looks gorgeous in black.

Yeah--The 4.2's are rare in these parts, but as I said, there seems to be quite a few in Ohio and Illinois, like 1-3 hours away. I wouldn't mind driving 3 hours to another state to get a car, but I would be pi$$ed if I drove all the way there to find out that the car was in terrible shape.
