2009 Toyota Yaris 3-Door Liftback

As in my other thread, I've been one a few business trips back to back and this time, I had the privilege to spend four days with the 2009 Toyota Yaris 3-door Liftback. This time, I was in Salisbury, North Carolina and between me and my co-worker, I drove this car only about 25% of the time and personally clocked in about 50+ miles during our trip.

First Impressions:
I was very taken back by the car's small size. I'm a pretty big guy--I hover around 5'10" 225lbs, so I was surprised that the car has plenty of room for four people plus luggage. There was even a time where we had to pack four of us in the car and we all fit in just comfortably inside. So, the car's interior space is quite adequate for an economy car and I found the front seats firm and good visibility outside, and the controls were very simple and nuanced. The car's VVT-i transmission packs decent acceleration from zero, but the car finds itself with a lot of torque steer, especially at higher speeds.

Pros:
The fuel economy was incredible. I think we spent about 140 miles in our Yaris and we barely cracked 75% of the tank. Very thrifty! The car has a lot more space inside than you'd think, and its nice and simple controls are pleasant to the eyes.

Cons:
The steering of the car is very loose and vague. It's a smaller car, so it has quite numb brakes, and maybe it was just us, but it took us quite a while to figure out how to open the back door! The legroom could've been better--I felt that my right foot/leg was scraping the side of the center console column while driving. The car also seems to have a tough time staying straight while driving at higher speeds and the rear seats felt as they were at a straight 90 degree angle, which isn't very good for passengers during longer trips.

Bottom Line:
I think this car is great for the younger-oriented crowd that are looking for a great fuel-efficient compact car for a very low price. Personally, compared to the Mazda3, I'm willing to sacrifice fuel economy and a few thousand dollars for a little bit more fun, slicker design, more legroom, and better overall performance.
