What kind of oil should I use?

I know that the owners manual says use 5W20 but I'm not sure what to use. The only thing I do know is that I'm goin to use Mobil 1 synthetic. Should I use the recommened 5W20 or should I use a 5W30 or a 10W30?

5w30 won't harm it any. If you use mobile 1 and can only find 5w30 you'll be fine. Mobile 1 tends to be on the thin side anyways. I have to use mobile 1 5w30 because that is all they sell on base (I'm overseas). They do have 5w20 Castrol synthetic but it is not the German made stuff so I stay away from it. My car seems to like the 5w30 just fine, hasn't comprimised my gas mileage at all.

RyanAF069,

You have to change the oil every 5k to maintain the warranty. M1 every 5k is overkill and expensive but if if that's what you feel comfortable with then use it. Again, to satisfy your warranty you should use 5W20. M1's 0W20 also meets the Ford spec: WSS-M2C930-A so you can use that too.
If you want to save $ any name brand 5W20 will protect quite well. Best "bang for the buck" oils are Motorcraft, Pennzoil and Havoline on sale/rebate for under $2.00/qt.

I used MotorCraft oil in my last vehicle (Sable - Vulcan V6). It had 182,000 miles when I sold it and the engine was in near perfect condition. I probably could have driven it another 100+k, but wanted a new toy!

If you use the wrong weight oil you will be screwed if you need warranty work. Follow the owners manual recommendations.

I use M1 5W-20 and change it every 5K; it's just a habit I have. But how does the dealership know that I'm changing the oil every 5K?

UnderEstimated,

You need to keep your oil and filter receipts as proof should you need warranty work.

There is no way that can be true. Thats just foolish. (No offense intended)

I will only use Mobil1. Using 10w versus 5w is not going to make any difference.

I also change my oil every 3k. I know they say 5k now, but I'd rather spend the extra money for the extra piece of mind. Call me old fashioned. :)

I think it's just more important to change your oil rather than worry about what brand you use. I've seen cars owned by complete dirt balls that miss oil changes constantly with 150k. Engines are built so good now that they should last to 150k with routine maintenance. I also look at it this way- How long to you really keep your car? If you're going to keep it until the wheels fall off, then maybe you should go with full syn. If I keep my car another 2 years it will be a miracle. I don't keep my cars long enough to worry about engine longevity. Whoever buys the car when I sell it, probably won't put full syn. in anyway. These aren't Porches and won't be bought up by the enthusiast crowd. I decided M1 wasn't worth it my last oil change. Motorcraft oil is more than adequate and it also semi-syn....it's also made by Mobil.

I know this is old but...I worked at a Ford dealership maybe you have heard of them World Ford. I worked at a World Ford of Homestead (Homestead Fl just before the Keys) [Now Armstrong Ford of Homestead] and they can ask a customer to verify maintenance records for major warranty work. While I was living in Fl I was training as a heavy line tech and in fact had to ask a few customers that ruined there motors cause they failed to do oil changes. They argued they had and the car was under warranty and we had better fix it. Well with an inch of sludge the Ford hotline said ask for records (recieps/RO's) for proof if they wanted there warranty honored. Ford in fact voided there warranty for lack of proof and an inch of sludge.

I use AMSOIL 0W-30 Series 2000 Premium Synthetic Motor Oil. Only gets changed once a year or 17,500 miles if conditions are brutal. I wouldn't use anything else. :D

bye-bye warranty!
You may want to consider an UOA , that is if there is enough pourable oil left at the end of a 17k run.

have always had good luck with it. Plus have have see results of changing all the stock fluids with Royal (oil, trans, and rear end) and picked up over 10hp at the tires. That stuff has to be good. If i do not use royle purple i will use Mobil 1 if it is good enough for a viper and M series Bimmers then it should be good enough for a fusion

I check the oil every 3000 miles due to my skepticism. So far about 6500+ in and the oil is still good! :-D
