What kind of oil should I use?

I know that the owners manual says use 5W20 but I'm not sure what to use. The only thing I do know is that I'm goin to use Mobil 1 synthetic. Should I use the recommened 5W20 or should I use a 5W30 or a 10W30?

If you can't find it in Mobil1, 5W30 should be ok.* Don't use 10W30.* FYI - the motorcraft semi-synthetic is a pretty good oil.

Re: What kind of oil should I use?

5w30 won't harm it any. If you use mobile 1 and can only find 5w30 you'll be fine. Mobile 1 tends to be on the thin side anyways. I have to use mobile 1 5w30 because that is all they sell on base (I'm overseas). They do have 5w20 Castrol synthetic but it is not the German made stuff so I stay away from it. My car seems to like the 5w30 just fine, hasn't comprimised my gas mileage at all.

Re: What kind of oil should I use?

RyanAF069,

You have to change the oil every 5k to maintain the warranty. M1 every 5k is overkill and expensive but if if that's what you feel comfortable with then use it. Again, to satisfy your warranty you should use 5W20. M1's 0W20 also meets the Ford spec: WSS-M2C930-A so you can use that too.
If you want to save $ any name brand 5W20 will protect quite well. Best "bang for the buck" oils are Motorcraft, Pennzoil and Havoline on sale/rebate for under $2.00/qt.

Re: What kind of oil should I use?

I used MotorCraft oil in my last vehicle (Sable - Vulcan V6). It had 182,000 miles when I sold it and the engine was in near perfect condition. I probably could have driven it another 100+k, but wanted a new toy!

If you use the wrong weight oil you will be screwed if you need warranty work. Follow the owners manual recommendations.

I use M1 5W-20 and change it every 5K; it's just a habit I have. But how does the dealership know that I'm changing the oil every 5K?

UnderEstimated,

You need to keep your oil and filter receipts as proof should you need warranty work.
