Adding SYNC - can it be done?

Hi guys,

The one thing I really wish my car came with is SYNC. Is it possible to add it aftermarket, and if so, how much $ would I be looking at? I'm primarily interested in the USB port.

Even if it's reasonably expensive, it's always nice to at least have the option.

Thanks.

Well I suppose anything can be done with enough effort & money.... but the easy answer is NO.
There is no way to add sync to your car. Sync is not located in the head unit in the car, so even if you bought a used one that is sync "compatible" it still would not have the sync interface built in. You would have to cut and add the USB port, add the mic that is located in the dash I believe around the clock or FUSION lettering. And the most important what I believe was called the "ACM" or Audio Control Module.... And the only reason I know that is because I wired up two aftermarket amps to a focus with sync (MAJOR PITA!!)

As far as you want the USB I would just get an aftermarket HU with an included USB port, I know Pioneer, kenwood, and Clarion all make nice HUs that have USB and blue tooth. Plus they all have variocolor displays/buttons to match the green (or whatever you want) and they are double din so they wont leave the dumb pocket under a single din HU (I have a single din in my car, trust me looks like hell)

I know its tan... I call it Yoda

Buy a nice afterharket head unit. It will be cheaper, do everything sync does including voice control, play dvds (and divx in some cases) and prevent headaches.

BTW. Someone should make a sticky on this topic.

YES, it can be done, for a price! Ford sells a Sync retrofit kit that locates the microphone on the A-pillar and the control buttons on the I/P. It includes the USB port. The part number is 9R3Z-14D212-A. Retails for $622.91, but Ford Parts Direct is selling for $477.44.

does anyone know how much this should cost to have it installed? Also, is the complete sync system that works with phones and mp3 players?

A good shop would probably charge $150-200 for one of those.

2006 Mercury Milan Premier, White on Camel/Cocoa
Pioneer AVIC-Z110BT, Stinger SHI Level 2 RCAs, JL Audio 0/1 multi amp power kit
Premier TS-D720C 6.75" components
Premier TS-W2501D4 10" sub, ported
Premier PRS-D4200F\1200M 4-channel\Mono

Would an aftermarket head unit still be able to make use of the media buttons on the steer wheel? Volume, next track, media, etc.

Also, thank you autoxr1 - that looks interesting. It's a bit pricier than I was hoping, but it's definitely an option if I can't find another way.

Yes, it's pricy. In my wife's Taurus X, which did not come with SYNC, we simply got a Garmin GPS for $150 that has Bluetooth and speakers built in. It gives her SYNC-like functionality for her phone with hands-free dialing and voice command of her phone book for little more than the cost of a GPS alone. Not a bad alternative.

Hi Seasonal. Because it is not compatible with the 2006-2007 models.

SYNC was first offered on the Fusion/Milan/MKZ in the 2008 models.

The 2006-2007 models are missing necessary components, wiring and connections for the SYNC retrofit kit to work.

It would take adding all of the missing pieces, plus the SYNC retrofit kit for SYNC to be added to a 2006-2007 model.

Good luck.
