I'm sure this isn't what you want to hear, but that car is not the best car to try this sort of thing. The 2.3 engine has limited power enhancement cability, and there are a very limited number of engines you can swap in.

The 2.5 from the 2010-2012 models will work relatively easy, if you have the time and a couple thousand dollars, but you won't see a massive gain in power.

Beyond that, you're looking at a substantial investment to get any noticeable gain in power, and even then, it won't be anything monumental.

Your best bet - get it in the best physical shape you can - Wash, clay, wax, etc.. and personalize it. You can make it LOOK great with a little work.

If you want a faster car, the most efficient, economical solution is almost always to sell it and buy a faster car.

Between labor, parts, and then having to troubleshoot any problems with your mechanic being in the dark as to what he's looking at, you're better off just buying a faster car.

Yes, it can cost you to less to modify if you've paid the entire car off... But personally I value my time just as much as money. For me, it wouldn't be worth it.

Obviously that's not what you want to hear, but it's the truth.

If you do it yourself, you can swap the 2.5L motor in for about $1200 bucks. Even then, you won't really get a faster car. Even after all possible mods, you will never probably achieve more than a 20-30 HP increase, and knock off another 33% for HP at the wheels. I'd spend your money on handling upgrades.

The rated 0-60 on the fourbangers is "Eventually". Sorry to say, these are simply not fast cars. Nothing you can really do will speed it up any appreciable amount without costing enough to just trade it towards something with a V6.

My 2010 is notably peppier than my 2008. That said, it's still a pooch to reach 60... pushing nearly 10 seconds at times.
