NooB Questions, 2015 Fusion Engine and Trans

I tried to search, but could not find the answer. I was wondering if the I4 engine and/or automatic transmission in the current Fusion are made by Ford or made by Mazda. Or was there some sort of joint effort in design, but Ford and Mazda manufacture their own?

Also, does the "S" mode in the transmission also have a different fuel/ignition map to add engine power?? Or just changes the shift pattern?

I know in the distant past that domestics didn't make very good 4 cylinder engines (Vega, Pinto, etc.) I've mostly owned European 4 cylinder cars, one Japanese V6, one Japanese opposed 4 cylinder, a horrible domestic slant-6, and a token domestic V8 in my Grand Marquis.

Different in S mode

I have run this test a few times. In D at steady throttle, going slightly uphill, 3rd gear, I'll move the selector to S. Every time I do that, I feel an increase in acceleration, BUT there is no downshift or change in converter lock-up. The tac stays the same...except that it will raise normally as the car goes faster. What it feels like is that, in S mode, perhaps the TPS signal to the ECU becomes "faster" or more sensitive for a given throttle position.

Anyone else find this to be true?

On all of the other cars I have driven, when in "S" mode, the trans delays the up-shifts, and downshifts come with less throttle input.

On this car, I've noticed that in "S" mode that the trans actually will "short-shift" on the up-shifts with the same moderate throttle input, but will delay going into 6th gear. It will actually up-shift and then lug @1500 rpm. The trans will downshift going down hill with your foot OFF the throttle. It just seems like the programing is all wrong based on other vehicles I've driven!!

Anyone have an occasional "shift-flair" from 2-3?

The 2.0L EcoBoost is built in Valencia Spain and designed in Germany.

The "S" position for my transmission is for manually shifting using the paddle shifters.

I did notice when driving on a very steep down hill highway with cruise control set to 65 mph, the car tries to maintain that speed by down shifting. On one long steep section it went to 5th and then 4th and was able to keep the speed at a couple miles over the 65 mph setting.

No one else having the same shift problems??

In "D" the up-shifts seem a bit high under light throttle, and a bit lazy. Not a crisp shift. Not like anything else I have owned or driven. And I have driven Honda, Subaru, Acura, Peugeot (German ZF trans), Kia, Ford F350, Chevy P30 (motorhome) etc. The interesting thing is, that under the same driving conditions, same throttle input, in "S" mode the trans shifts much sooner (lower RPM) and will tend to lug the engine. It will stay in 5th longer before shifting into 6th however. WOT shifts aren't anything special compared to "D" either. So this shift pattern seems to be the OPPOSITE of what you would expect.

I've only got 3K miles on it, but will take it in anyway, just to document the concerns.I will make sure they WRITE DOWN everything I just wrote above.

Interesting, I would expect the opposite also!

This is how the manual explains the operation and how I would expect it to work:
Sport (S)
Moving the gearshift lever to sport (S):
• Provides additional grade (engine) braking and extends lower gear operation to enhance performance for uphill climbs, hilly terrain or mountainous areas. This increases engine RPM during engine braking.
• Provides additional lower gear operation through the automatic transmission shift strategy.
• Gears are selected more quickly and at higher engine speeds.

I'll have to try this next time I'm in the hills. I did notice on an extended downhill grade, in "D" and cruise engaged, the transmission down shifts to "5th" and even to "4th" to try to maintain the set speed. It does this quite well.

I don't have 2000 miles on mine yet. Since I don't have to drive to work and have been on vacation to Mexico and another trip to SoCal, I haven't been able to rack up many miles. Bought it Jan. 29, 2015
